It is named after the Italian city of Bergamo, the original place of bergamot oil trade. Bergamot is rich in polyphenolic compounds, and has the distinction of being the only citrus fruit to contain melitidin and brutieridin proven to have an anti-cholesteroleffect comparable to statins.
